Position Overview:
SDOT's Transportation Operations Division (TOD) has a great opportunity to perform entry-level civil engineering work as an Assistant Traffic Operations Engineer (under the City's classification title of Assistant Civil Engineer). This position will investigate traffic operations safety concerns, conduct fieldwork, research various data resources, collision analysis and evaluation, and develop alternatives for traffic safety enhancements. Work includes developing and reviewing work orders for multiple installation crews, as well as inspect projects for design compatibility. Other responsibilities include plan review support, reviewing plans for internal Capital projects, programmatic safety enhancement projects as well as external private development projects, to ensure consistency with city, state and federal requirements and standard practices. The position will report to the Civil Engineering Supervisor.
Job Responsibilities

  • Investigate and respond to traffic safety operations concerns.
  • Conduct fieldwork as necessary to verify, inspect and evaluate site specific concerns.
  • Conduct traffic engineering studies on traffic flow, traffic accident locations, parking, and other traffic-related matters.
  • Identify and develop recommendations for traffic saftey enhancements.
  • Develop and review work orders for multiple installation crews.
  • Review plans and development proposals for impacts related to traffic, transportation, and street improvements; to ensure compliance with design standards and construction requirements.
  • Review temporary traffic control plans to ensure they comply with Seattle Traffic Control Manual for In-Street Work Interact with internal and external stakeholders including residents, neighborhood groups, other government agencies and business agencies in verbal and written formats.
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional civil engineering work.
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Successful candidates will possess many of these additional qualifications or be able to demonstrate comparable experience and expertise:

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate preferred.
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational, time-management, and customer service skills.
  • Experience with designing and/or reviewing channelization plans, signing plans, paving plans, and signal plans.
  • Experience with applying the MUTCD ( Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices ).
  • Experience with AutoCAD and AutoTurn.
  • Effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.

Additional Information
Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment with hybrid options at this time.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

The full salary range for this position is $37.98 - $41.06 per hour.
